Echocardiography (Echo)

This is an ultrasound of the heart. This technology uses sound waves to create pictures of the heart in real time. This technology allows are specialists to take pictures of your child’s heart and diagnose all heart conditions. The study is completely painless. There is no risk. The study will be performed by one of our specialists or highly trained sonographers. Our specialists have access to the most up-to-date machines. We will be able to provide immediate results and feedback following the test.


This test allows for the electrical recording of the heart rhythm. Some special stickers will be used to sense the electrical activity and will be recorded over a 10 second period. This is a painless, quick and totally risk free test.

Sometimes our specialists will recommend recording the heart rhythm over a longer time period. A Holter monitor records the heart rhythm for 24 or 48 hours. Your child will need to wear 4 stickers under their clothes, which will be connected to a small portable box that will be placed in a pocket. Normal activity will recommended during the recording time. However, no water
activity will be possible. The test is painless.

Stress ECG Testing

Occasionally, our specialists will recommend an ECG to be undertaken during controlled exercise on a treadmill. This allows are specialists to assess exercise capacity and monitor the heart rhythm under exercise conditions. Certain heart rhythm conditions can only be diagnosed only during activity. This test will be undertaken in the cardiology department in on of the children’s hospitals.

Cardiac Catheterisation

For more complex heart conditions, our specialists may recommend a Cardiac Catheter test. Our specialists are qualified to perform this investigation as necessary. In children this is performed under a general anaesthetic. Dr Mervis is one of only three specialists qualified to perform this procedure in NSW. It may be performed for diagnostic purposes, but our specialists are part of the only specialist centre in NSW providing interventional techniques such as closure of holes in the heart or opening blocked valves.

Electrophysiological Studies and Ablations

Many heart rhythm conditions can be cured by an electrophysiological study and ablation. Our specialists are able to arrange and perform this procedure for your child. Under a general anaesthetic, catheters are used to diagnose and then treat the underlying heart rhythm condition. Dr Turner is one of only three specialised paediatric doctors in NSW qualified to perform this procedure. Dr Turner is the lead heart rhythm specialist in the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network.

Fetal Echocardiography

This is a specialist obstetric ultrasound performed by a fetal cardiologist. It is performed during pregnancy most commonly at around 20 weeks, but may be possible from 14 weeks gestation enabling the early and accurate diagnosis of structural heart conditions. It is painless and harm free to your baby. This service is available to all women at increased risk or suspected of having a baby with a cardiac condition. Diagnosing your baby’s heart condition prior to birth will allow beneficial planning and counselling prior to your baby’s birth. Dr Forsey is the lead fetal cardiologist for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network and NSW programme.

You will need to confirm your appointment

During your appointment, your child will have a full and comprehensive consultation with one of our specialist doctors. At this time our specialist senior doctors will discuss the history of your child’s condition, assess clinical symptoms, take a family history and perform an examination. Some tests may be arranged immediately with most children requiring an echocardiogram. Other tests may be arranged with our specialist doctors’ affiliations to the Children’s Hospitals.


This is private practise and payment will be required on the day of your appointment. Our reception team will be happy to discuss the out of pocket costs involved at the time of booking your appointment. Our practise is able to automatically lodge your Medicare claim on your behalf. This allows the Medicare rebate to be sent directly to your registered bank account.
A valid referral from your GP or other specialist is necessary for you to receive a Medicare rebate.
